A bodybuilder from Brazil known as the real-life Popeye sadly passed away at the age of 55 this week. Arlindo de Souza’s family suspects that his death was due to multiple organ failure. He was famous for his massive 29-inch biceps, which many believed were enhanced through the use of synthol, a harmful mixture of mineral oil and alcohol. Despite the visual enlargement of muscles, synthol does not actually increase muscle strength and can lead to severe consequences.
Arlindo experienced the dangers firsthand when his friend, Pulinho, died after injecting himself with synthol. Arlindo warned others against using the oil, stating that he had stopped using it himself. He recounted the impact of his friend’s death, advising against its usage and acknowledging his struggle to resist the temptation to start again.
Additionally, there are other cases of bodybuilders, such as Kirill Tereshin, also known as the Russian Popeye or ‘Bazooka Arms’, who injected synthol into his arms extensively. Reports indicated that he may require a double amputation due to the damage caused by the substance. Despite having a substantial following on Instagram, Kirill faced the possibility of skin grafts to save his arm, which was deemed unfeasible due to his poor health test results.
Another bodybuilder, Gregg Valentino, resorted to synthol injections to enhance his muscle size, leading to a disastrous outcome when an abscess formed, causing his bicep to explode. After the incident, Gregg underwent medical treatment that resulted in a more natural appearance. He is now recognized as a bodybuilding figure and shares his journey on Instagram.
Similarly, Valdir Segato, a Brazilian bodybuilder, passed away at the age of 55, reportedly due to a heart attack linked to his use of synthol injections. Prior to his death, Valdir had amassed a significant social media following but faced criticism for his extreme aesthetic choices. His neighbor expressed sorrow over Valdir’s isolated struggle with self-inflicted harm, caused by the use of synthol on his body.
Valdir had openly shared his desire to continue using synthol despite medical advice against it, highlighting the individual choice and the risks associated with such enhancements. His story, like others in the bodybuilding community, serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pursuing extreme aesthetics through harmful substances.
