Ukraine’s Vladyslav Heraskevych has been removed from participation in the Winter Olympics by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to his insistence on wearing a helmet featuring images of 24 deceased Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives in Russia’s invasion. Heraskevych, a skeleton pilot, brought the helmet to Milano Cortina but was informed that it violated regulations. Despite his efforts to appeal to the IOC, he was disqualified and his accreditation revoked.

Expressing his refusal to compete without the helmet, Heraskevych emphasized that it would be a betrayal to the athletes he wanted to honor. He intends to challenge the decision by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, expressing his feelings of emptiness and emphasizing the importance of dignity.

His father and coach, Mykhailo, was visibly emotional upon learning of the disqualification. The IOC clarified that the issue stemmed from Heraskevych’s non-compliance with their guidelines on athlete expression, despite efforts to find a compromise.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry engaged in discussions with Heraskevych in person, aiming to resolve the situation respectfully. Coventry expressed disappointment that an agreement could not be reached and reiterated her desire to see Heraskevych compete.

Heraskevych made a last-minute plea for the ban to be lifted and demanded an apology from the IOC before the competition began. However, his request was denied, with the IOC stating that mourning is interpreted differently around the world.
