In my opinion, every child born in this nation should have an equal opportunity to establish a future. This includes access to quality education, a suitable residence, and regular meals for breakfast and dinner.

My commitment to creating a more just and equitable society led me to announce the elimination of the two-child limit during the previous year’s Budget presentation.

The prior administration’s decision to uphold this restriction resulted in the deprivation of food, warmth, and clothing from hundreds of thousands of children. It pushed numerous families into financial difficulty and exacerbated the struggles of households already grappling with financial challenges. Furthermore, it introduced the controversial “rape clause” to our welfare system.

As the Labour Chancellor who oversaw the removal of this limit, I take pride in our efforts. In conjunction with the introduction of free breakfast clubs and complimentary school meals for families on Universal Credit, we aim to lift over half a million children out of poverty by 2030.

This initiative will offer half a million children a better start in life, enabling them to attend school without the fear and uncertainty brought about by poverty. Recently, I had the privilege of hosting some of these children and advocates for women’s rights at Downing Street.

I personally witnessed their relief, determination, and resilience in the face of prolonged uncertainty. The stories of courage and inspiration shared by the parents and young individuals I met that day will always remain with me.

Today, Parliament will vote on behalf of these families, marking a significant milestone in dismantling a harmful policy that has negatively impacted many individuals for an extended period. My vote tonight is clear, and I urge the Conservative and Reform parties to justify their stance.

Nevertheless, our work must continue beyond this point. It is imperative to continue building a nation where every child has an equitable start in life and where every parent is treated with dignity, respect, and the necessary assistance. This is the driving force behind my involvement in politics and government, and I am resolute in delivering on this promise.
