Sabrina Gervais, a mother, healthcare professional, and seasoned flag football player, is aiming to fulfill her Olympic aspirations as she leads Canada’s national women’s team in the 2026 world championship. The team’s goal goes beyond winning the gold medal in Germany; they are also eyeing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where flag football will debut as an Olympic sport.
For Gervais, the prospect of competing in the Olympics is a dream she never thought possible. As a key defensive player, she emphasized the importance of staying healthy and providing leadership for her team to increase their chances of Olympic qualification.
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship kicks off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada set to face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in the initial matches. The top two teams in the tournament will secure Olympic berths, with a potential third spot available if the United States reaches the gold-medal game, having already qualified as the host nation.
While the world championship serves as an Olympic qualifier, failing to secure a spot in Germany would mean Canada having to participate in subsequent events to earn their place in the 2028 Olympics. Despite facing tough competition, Canada emerged as a strong contender following their success at the previous IFAF Americas Continental championship.
Gervais, hailing from Maskinonge, Quebec, expressed her optimism for the upcoming challenges, particularly against Mexico, their previous rival. Reflecting on past experiences and learnings, Gervais emphasized the team’s readiness to face any opponent in pursuit of their Olympic dreams.
In addition to their international achievements, Canada also clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 World Games in China, showcasing their growing reputation in the flag football arena. Gervais highlighted the team’s consistent performance and the increasing recognition they are receiving within the sport.
Apart from her athletic endeavors, Gervais juggles her football career with motherhood and a full-time profession in healthcare. She credits her support system, discipline in training, and understanding of her body for maintaining her performance levels. As a mentor to younger players, Gervais values positivity, teamwork, and strategic guidance to enhance the team’s cohesion on the field.
Acknowledging the vital role of head coach Rachel Lessard in their success, Gervais commended her leadership and values that have propelled the team to global acclaim. She emphasized the importance of team chemistry over individual talent, underscoring the unity that defines Canada’s strength in competition.
Despite her extensive experience, Gervais remains focused on taking each day as it comes and prioritizing enjoyment and impact over long-term goals. She believes in setting an example for others through dedication and perseverance, aiming to inspire the next generation of athletes both on and off the field.
