Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant decrease in her earnings, a situation shared by many others in the industry. SiriusXM has discontinued its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, known for showcasing over 800 comedians, and introduced a new channel led by popular comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This change has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a crucial source of income and visibility, as high-profile celebrity comics now dominate the spotlight. Miele expressed how SiriusXM had been a financial lifeline for her during tough times, highlighting the impact on fellow comedians facing various challenges like caring for sick family members or newborns.

Despite promises from Maniscalco and SiriusXM to provide opportunities for comedians at different career stages, data from industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup indicates a contrasting reality. The previous channel, Raw Comedy, featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning royalties for their performances. However, the revamped channel now spotlights only 275 comedians, with a significant portion of airtime dedicated to top-tier artists, leaving many struggling comedians behind.

The shift towards a select group of wealthy comedians has raised concerns about income disparity within the comedy industry. Miele, once a top performer on the channel, criticized the concentration of wealth, emphasizing the adverse impact on the wider comedy community.

For Canadian comedians like Danish Anwar, the loss of royalties from Raw Comedy has resulted in a substantial income reduction, affecting their ability to sustain themselves and pursue opportunities in the U.S. Anwar highlighted the financial security that many comedians relied on in the past being jeopardized by the channel’s closure.

High-profile comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have urged Maniscalco to ensure emerging comedians have a platform to develop their careers. Maniscalco, in response to the backlash, clarified that the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy was made by SiriusXM before his involvement, citing performance issues as the reason.

While promises have been made to support a diverse range of voices in comedy, skeptics like Anwar remain cautious, emphasizing the importance of tangible actions over statements. The situation has prompted calls for unity and advocacy within the comedy industry to address issues of fair pay, treatment, and labor practices to mitigate the financial impact experienced by many comedians.
