A renowned diet developed by researchers may aid individuals in losing weight and reducing high blood pressure levels. For those recommended by their doctor to shed pounds, numerous scientifically supported diets are available to help them effectively manage their weight.

One such option is the DASH diet, crafted by experts in the United States under the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Noted as the ‘best heart-healthy diet’ and ‘best diet for high blood pressure,’ the DASH diet advocates for reduced salt intake while focusing on nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This approach has the potential to facilitate weight loss, as mentioned by nutritionist Robert Hobson, author of Unprocess Your Life.

Hobson, speaking to Saga Magazine, highlighted that the DASH diet, similar to the Mediterranean Diet, prioritizes fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and restricts salt, sugar, and fat consumption. While originally intended to lower high blood pressure, many individuals following the DASH diet have also experienced weight loss.

Studies have shown that individuals can shed weight, ranging from a small to significant amount, such as 3.8 kg in just eight weeks in a particular study, when adhering to the DASH diet. This success is often attributed to the diet’s emphasis on consuming lower-calorie fruits and vegetables. Consistency over time is key for sustainable outcomes.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that special foods are not required to follow the diet. Instead, individuals are encouraged to consume specific portions from each food group based on their daily calorie requirements. The diet also stresses choosing foods low in saturated and trans fats, as well as reducing sodium intake.

The British Heart Foundation provides guidance and recipe suggestions for DASH diet followers. Notably, a large study published in 2019 in the Nutrients journal revealed that the DASH diet was associated with a decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels. Additionally, it was linked to a 20% reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, stroke, and coronary heart disease, alongside potential improvements in other heart and circulatory disease risk factors.

According to the NHS, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,500kcal for men and 2,000kcal for women. Individuals with health concerns are advised to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
