In response, Democratic representatives Tim Kennedy, Joe Morelle, and Debbie Dingell introduced the Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act to reverse the name change and prevent future alterations to any of the Great Lakes.

Additionally, reports emerged that Trump had engaged with Apple to encourage a similar change on Apple Maps. However, MapQuest publicly announced its decision not to alter the name.
Representative Kennedy, a Buffalonian with close ties to Canada, expressed concerns about the renaming as a diversion from more critical issues such as trade disputes with Canada. He emphasized the need to rescind the executive order promptly.
