A family was shocked to learn their son had passed away, only to discover he was actually alive weeks later.
South Yorkshire Police initially reported that Trevor Wynn, 17, had died in a tragic accident. However, it was later revealed that Trevor was alive and receiving treatment in a hospital after the collision in Rotherham. The teenager, also known as TJ, from Worksop, Nottinghamshire, was mistakenly identified as deceased by authorities.
Trevor survived the crash, while unfortunately, two other teenagers lost their lives in the incident. The police stated that a silver Toyota Corolla had veered off the road while traveling away from Dinnington, South Yorkshire.
One of the deceased teenagers was identified as 18-year-old Joshua Johnson, who was in the vehicle with an unnamed 17-year-old female driver. Initially, authorities believed Joshua was the one being treated in the hospital, but it was later confirmed that it was Trevor.
Following new information on Sunday, formal identification procedures were initiated, including forensic examinations. Trevor’s family had started a GoFundMe page believing he had died, but they updated it to inform supporters of the mistaken identity and the teenager’s survival.
The family emphasized the challenges ahead for Trevor’s recovery, including medical expenses, rehabilitation, travel costs, accommodations, and other family needs. They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and donations from well-wishers.
A funeral planned for Trevor had to be canceled upon discovering he was alive. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the incident, one for causing death by dangerous driving and the other for obstructing justice. They are currently on bail pending further investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane acknowledged the shock caused by the mistaken identity and pledged support for Trevor and all affected families. An independent investigation was initiated to understand the identification errors and prevent similar incidents in the future.
