Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a father living in Toronto, stumbled upon the idea of an international whistling contest while watching a quiz show. Intrigued, he signed himself and his daughter, Sumire, up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a light-hearted activity during the pandemic. Surprisingly, they were selected to audition for the competition.
Upon learning that the contest was in-person in Los Angeles, Shannon realized the seriousness of the competition. Seeking guidance, they underwent coaching with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. The feedback was eye-opening, highlighting the need for dedicated practice.
Despite initial doubts, Shannon and Sumire committed to daily practice sessions leading up to the competition. With determination and effort, they found themselves in Hollywood for the 2023 Master of Musical Whistling event, surrounded by talented contestants from around the globe.

Stepping on stage, Sumire won silver in the kid’s category, while Shannon clinched gold in the level one adults’ category.
