A tragic incident unfolded just days before Christmas as a 28-year-old father of three, Dylan Jones, passed away following a 15-hour wait for medical attention.

Jones was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver when he experienced excruciating pain in his side while at work on December 10. After calling emergency services, it took two hours for an ambulance to arrive.

Upon reaching the A&E department at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Jones endured a 13-hour wait on a trolley in a corridor for an MRI scan, according to his family. During this time, Jones suffered a spleen rupture, leading to emergency surgery to control internal bleeding. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his condition on December 20.

The official cause of Jones’ death was determined to be liver failure, spleen rupture, and a congenital condition known as Jeune Syndrome. However, his family believes that the prolonged wait for medical care contributed to his untimely demise.

Expressing her dismay, Jones’ cousin, Billielea Porter, stated that by the time Jones underwent the necessary procedures, his condition had deteriorated to a point where full recovery was unlikely.

Porter emphasized, “From the beginning, healthcare providers were aware of his liver condition. It was unacceptable for him to endure such a long wait on a trolley.” She added, “He fought bravely, but if he had received prompt attention, he would still be with us today, providing for his children.”

In response to the tragedy, Jones’ family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and offer support to his three young children.

The spokesperson for Scottish Labour Health, Jackie Baillie, described Jones’ passing as “heartbreaking” and a “scandal,” highlighting the profound implications of the healthcare crisis in the NHS.

Addressing the incident, Tracey Gillies, Medical Director of NHS Lothian, extended condolences to Jones’ family, expressing regret over the lengthy wait at the A&E department. Gillies clarified that despite intensive care and multiple interventions, Jones could not be saved due to his longstanding and severe illness.

The Scottish Ambulance Service also extended their sympathies to Jones’ family and offered to engage with them through their Patient Experience Team to address any concerns raised during the emergency response.

Cirrhosis of the liver, a condition affecting approximately 60,000 individuals in the UK, can lead to life-threatening complications such as malnutrition, sepsis, and blood clots, as reported by the NHS.
