McDonald, who typically plays from the silver tees at almost 5,800 yards, still finds the course to be a demanding challenge with its long layout and large, fast greens. Shooting a 72 at such a difficult course was a special achievement for him, considering he hadn’t accomplished that in a while.
Playing golf three to four times a week and preferring to walk the course, McDonald maintains his physical fitness despite past health issues. He believes in the importance of staying active and engaged to maintain his strength and agility, emphasizing the motto “If you don’t use it, you lose it.”
A friend of McDonald, Peter Stirling, praised his dedication to the game and highlighted McDonald’s commitment to walking the course and keeping fit. McDonald’s consistency in scoring well is attributed to his disciplined approach to the game, resulting in him typically shooting in the high 70s.
Having started playing golf at the age of 30 while in the air force, McDonald quickly excelled in the sport and won three national titles in military tournaments. His passion for golf continued even after retirement, and he has since accumulated 17 holes-in-one, with the pursuit of his 18th ace being a current goal.
