Russian airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals and wounded several others in Kyiv and the nearby area early on Tuesday, marking the sixth day in a row that the Ukrainian capital has been under attack. Since initiating a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has intensified its air assaults on the country, particularly in recent months as its military progress has significantly slowed.
Over the past five days, Kyiv and its vicinity have been plagued by swarms of drones, causing fatalities, property damage, and disruptions to daily life for residents. These drones, equipped with jet engines, have proven more challenging to intercept. The continuous attacks have led to prolonged air-raid alerts, disrupting the routines of millions of people.
Further explosions were reported in the capital on Tuesday morning, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stating that Russian drones and ballistic missiles targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure during the intense overnight bombardment. Sybiha urged Ukraine’s allies to ramp up economic pressure on Russia and explore the use of Russian assets frozen overseas to support Ukraine’s war efforts.
In the latest attacks, eight individuals, primarily railway workers, lost their lives in Kyiv, while a daytime drone strike caused a fire in a high-rise apartment building, injuring three more people. Outside Kyiv, in Boryspil, four individuals perished and 13 sustained injuries in an assault on a residential building and other locations. Among the casualties was an Indian citizen.
The assaults also extended to a border crossing with Romania in Odesa, resulting in power outages for numerous families in the area, as mentioned by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Meanwhile, Ukraine has retaliated by targeting Russian facilities, including oil refineries and logistics infrastructure, escalating tensions between the two nations.
Despite the ongoing conflict, peace talks led by the U.S. have stalled due to Ukraine’s refusal to meet Russian territorial demands and heightened U.S. focus on other global issues. President Zelenskyy recently engaged in productive discussions with U.S. envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, with plans underway for a potential visit to Ukraine.
The situation remains volatile as both sides continue their military engagements, raising concerns about further casualties and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
