The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has initiated Cold Weather Payments in nearly 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This action follows the issuance of winter weather warnings by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately half a million households will qualify for the payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.

These payments have been activated in a total of 246 postcode areas, including regions such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. The eligible postcodes for today’s payments can be found on the interactive map provided.

Cold Weather Payments are distributed to recipients of various benefits in England and Wales. A similar scheme operates in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, support for heating bills is given annually, not tied to specific cold weather periods. This winter, £25 payments have been triggered for 697 postcode areas, with some areas receiving multiple payments due to prolonged cold spells.

Today’s payments are expected to reach around 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for approximately 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure for the Cold Weather Payments activated today is estimated at £13.3 million. Forecasts indicate a cold spell leading into the New Year, prompting the triggering of payments when average temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero for seven consecutive days.

Under the DWP scheme, an estimated 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments, including 1.2 million who receive Pensions Credit. Those receiving benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for the payments, although eligibility depends on various factors outlined on the GOV.UK website.

The £25 payments are automatically deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with payment references including the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is necessary to receive these payments. The triggering of payments is based on weather station data, with various stations across the country signaling the eligibility of households for the Cold Weather Payments.
