Keir Starmer has responded firmly to Donald Trump’s recent unconventional threat of imposing tariffs on Greenland.
In a bold move, the US President declared that several nations, including the UK, would face a 10% tariff on all exports to the US if they continued to oppose his ambition to acquire Greenland. Trump also warned that this tariff could surge to 25% if his Greenland acquisition plans were not met by June.
Reacting to the situation, the UK Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and its destiny should be determined by the Greenlanders and Danes. He reiterated the importance of Arctic Security within NATO, stressing the need for collective efforts to counter threats from Russia across the Arctic region. The Prime Minister criticized the notion of imposing tariffs on allies for upholding NATO’s security objectives, labeling it as fundamentally misguided. He indicated that the UK would engage directly with the US administration to address the matter.
In contrast, Trump argued that it was time for Denmark to reciprocate after years of subsidies and non-tariff treatment from the US. He claimed that China and Russia were eyeing Greenland, asserting that only the US, under his leadership, could effectively manage the situation. Trump highlighted security concerns and the role of Greenland in national and global defense strategies.
Amid escalating tensions, the UK dispatched a military representative to Greenland following Denmark’s increased military presence in the Arctic and High North.
In response to Trump’s tariff threats, various European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasized the importance of respecting national sovereignty and international principles. Macron expressed support for Denmark’s actions in Greenland, underscoring the significance of Arctic security for European borders.
Opposition figures in the UK, such as Lib Dem leader Ed Davey and Kemi Badenoch, criticized Trump’s tariff proposals, condemning them as detrimental to both countries’ economies and sovereignty. Nigel Farage also disapproved of the tariffs, warning of their negative impact.
