King Charles III of the United Kingdom possesses an estimated personal wealth of around £640 million, excluding the value of the Crown Estate, which is managed on behalf of the monarch. However, this fortune pales in comparison to the wealth of Thailand’s King Rama X. King Rama X, officially known as His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, inherited a legacy worth $43 billion upon ascending to the throne in 2016, making him the world’s wealthiest monarch.

Reports indicate that King Rama X has invested his immense wealth wisely, particularly in property and the telecommunications sector, further boosting his already substantial fortune. His diversified portfolio includes commercial properties, luxury hotels, and a collection of around 300 high-end vehicles, ranging from classic Rolls-Royces to cutting-edge supercars. Additionally, the king possesses 38 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft in his personal “air force,” many of which are customized to his specific needs.

In line with Thai traditions, King Rama X maintains a ceremonial fleet of 52 golden barges for river processions that showcase the monarchy’s deep cultural connections to the nation. Like the UK’s Crown Estate, Thailand’s Crown Property Bureau oversees the royal family’s commercial interests, although King Rama X has increasingly tightened his personal control over the organization.

However, the king’s immense wealth, alongside Thailand’s significant economic disparities, has raised concerns among some citizens. Calls for democratic reforms, constitutional amendments, and the repeal of laws prohibiting criticism of the monarch have emerged. In a notable move, King Rama X brought two army units under his direct command in 2019, leading to discussions about a potential shift towards an absolute monarchy.

Analysts have observed that King Rama X has taken a more central role in Thai politics compared to his father, King Bhumibol, exerting influence over both the military and political spheres. This shift has sparked debates about the balance of power in the country and the implications of the monarch’s increasing involvement in governance.
