Labour is set to reveal assistance for the struggling pub industry in the UK, as data shows that two pubs are closing down each day. The government is anticipated to introduce a set of measures soon to address an impending tax increase.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has acknowledged the challenges faced by pub owners and is prepared to take action, particularly concerning business rates. However, it remains uncertain whether the forthcoming support will be temporary or permanent relief, as industry stakeholders are calling for immediate intervention to prevent further closures.

Recent statistics indicate that in the last quarter of 2025, 188 pubs shut down, with the majority being community-focused establishments that heavily rely on alcohol sales. Additionally, there was a decline in food-led pubs and high street locations during this period.

The Mirror has been advocating for the pub sector through its Your Pub Needs You campaign, advocating for aid for landlords and their local communities. While any extra support will be welcomed, many in the pub industry believe that significant measures are necessary to halt the closure trend, which has seen over 2,000 pubs shuttered since the beginning of 2020.

Pubs are facing a multitude of challenges, including shifting consumer behaviors, wage increases, and rising energy expenses. The most immediate threat is the proposed rise in business rates due to the removal of Covid-era relief and upcoming revaluations in April.

Despite the Treasury’s assertion of providing a £4.3 billion support package to limit pub expenses, there are calls for similar assistance to be extended to other businesses impacted by rate hikes.

Data from NIQ revealed a decrease of 382 hospitality sites across the UK between September and December, with more than four closures occurring per day. The fear is that the closure rate may escalate in the new year as consumers restrain spending.

Moreover, the report highlighted the closure of nightclubs and sports/social clubs over the past year. NIQ emphasized the strain of increasing operational costs on the hospitality sector and warned of potential additional closures in the coming months without adequate support.

A Treasury spokesperson emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting pubs, citing the previously announced support package as a step to shield most ratepayers from business rate hikes.
