Molly, an African spurred tortoise, was discovered leisurely wandering near a vast wetland in the Canadian prairie, sparking confusion among onlookers. The tortoise, native to the Sahara desert, seemed out of place at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake region. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, expressed surprise at the large tortoise’s presence, as it was a unique sight for the area.

After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, Malchuk and her colleagues rescued the 36-kilogram creature. Initially, they dismissed the sightings as a mistake, assuming it was a common snapping turtle native to Manitoba. However, an entry on the iNaturalist app confirmed the tortoise’s presence, prompting a search mission.

The tortoise was eventually located in the parking lot of Oak Hammock Marsh, defying expectations of a smaller creature. Staff members fed Molly cucumbers and flower petals, providing care until her owners were identified through a social media post. Molly was reunited with her family, who had raised her for 15 years, suggesting she had escaped through a gap in their backyard fence during renovations.

Despite the joyful reunion, the mystery remains as to how Molly traveled 20 kilometers to the marsh. Speculations include a well-intentioned individual relocating her to what they thought was a suitable habitat, or Molly embarking on the journey herself. Malchuk emphasized the tortoise’s resilience, noting that only Molly knows the true story of her remarkable adventure.
