A man has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for forcing a woman to have sexual relations with potentially up to 1,000 men over a span of three decades.
The exact count of individuals involved may forever remain uncertain, but the court was informed that it could be close to a thousand men over a 30-year period.
Rodney Johnston, 67, from Starston in Norfolk, coerced the woman into participating in various sexual activities with men at remote rural locations, as well as in hotels and vehicles, according to court proceedings.
These encounters frequently lasted for hours and included gatherings of up to 15 men, as indicated by the jury.
During a trial in September where he was convicted, it was revealed that Johnston documented the abuse by photographing and filming it.
Judge Alice Robinson described the victim’s impact statement as “harrowing,” while prosecutors suggested that she might have been compelled to engage in sexual acts with as many as a thousand men, although the actual figure remains unknown.
In addition to receiving a life sentence at Norwich Crown Court, the judge emphasized the profound and enduring effects of the abuse as expressed in the victim’s words.
Authorities discovered over 30,000 images and videos depicting the abuse, with the woman reportedly being coerced into having intimate encounters with men as frequently as five nights per week.
The judge remarked, “‘Going out’ became synonymous with her being violated by strangers. This is essentially rape by another name.”
The victim conveyed feeling repulsed after these incidents, indicating that any resistance on her part led to threats or punishments from Johnston.
In a police statement, the victim described feeling “used” and “terrified” following years of appalling mistreatment.
“I had no voice, no choice,” she expressed. “I feel anxious about the future, but for the first time in decades I am free.”
Johnston was found guilty of multiple offenses spanning from 1994 to 2024, including coercion, sexual activity without consent, and witness intimidation.
Throughout the six-week trial, Johnston refuted all accusations, asserting that the interactions were consensual. However, law enforcement presented evidence supporting the woman’s claims of coercion and exploitation.
It was revealed in court that Johnston disseminated mass text messages to men he had encountered through adult social platforms, advertising locations and times for engaging in sexual activities with the woman.
Norfolk Police reported that Johnston dismissed many of these messages as mere “banter” and a fulfillment of his “fantasies.”
Nevertheless, law enforcement highlighted numerous messages corroborating the victim’s narrative, including communications she shared with a friend detailing the abuse.
In a post-sentencing statement, the victim expressed, “I found myself in a situation I never imagined I would be in. What I then went on to endure I would not wish on anybody.”
She characterized Johnston as a monster who treated her as nothing more than an object, leading her to feel dirty, sick, used, degraded, humiliated, and terrified.
“I no longer know who I am,” she lamented. “Now I must rebuild myself, and I often feel lost and unsure where to begin.”
Family members of the woman expressed immense pride in her bravery, while Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Woodhams lauded her courage and the extensive effort involved in bringing Johnston to justice.
Police disclosed launching a new investigation aimed at other individuals involved in the abuse, indicating a commitment to uncovering further offenses and holding accountable those responsible.
They encouraged other abuse victims to come forward, assuring them of a listening ear and support in seeking justice for their ordeals.
