NHS data released today has raised concerns about a potential uptick in a severe stomach illness. Hospitalizations due to norovirus in England surged by 57% last week, with an average of 567 hospital beds occupied daily by patients suffering from the highly contagious bug. Although still below the peak of last winter’s infections, the rapid increase within a week has sparked fears of a significant rise, particularly after children returned to school post-Christmas break.

The UK Health Security Agency is set to publish the latest infection data from surveillance labs today, shedding light on whether infections are escalating similarly across the broader community. Recent data from surveillance labs by the UK Health Security Agency revealed a 47% increase in norovirus infections in the general population during the first two weeks of 2026. Elderly individuals, the most vulnerable group, experienced the highest infection rates, with reports of outbreaks in hospitals. Meanwhile, flu-related hospitalizations showed a slight decline last week, with 2,725 patients hospitalized in England compared to 2,924 the previous week.

Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS England’s Medical Director, remarked on the positive trend of declining flu cases in hospitals post-festive period, although bed occupancy remains high, indicating the persistence of winter challenges.

According to NHS guidelines, symptoms of norovirus typically manifest suddenly and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, high temperature, headache, abdominal discomfort, and body aches. Individuals experiencing such symptoms are advised by health officials to refrain from attending school, nursery, or work until two days after recovery from sickness or diarrhea. They are also urged to avoid hospitals and care homes during this period.

Recovery from norovirus usually occurs within two to three days, with emphasis on staying hydrated to prevent dehydration, as per NHS recommendations. Search trends on Google saw a substantial 5,500% surge in queries related to identifying norovirus symptoms in the past week.

NHS guidance highlights that individuals should seek medical advice by calling 111 if they or their child experience diarrhea for more than seven days or vomiting for over two days.
