Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has addressed the concerns raised over Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension earlier this year. Sinner, an Italian tennis star, accepted a three-month ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid, clostebol, on two occasions in 2024.
Initially, Sinner escaped punishment as it was determined that the positive tests were due to contamination during a massage by his fitness coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Sinner was not at fault for the test results in March 2024.
The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year and dismissed claims of preferential treatment. In February, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency after they challenged the initial decision not to suspend him.
Following his three-month suspension from February to May this year, Sinner strategically timed his return to coincide with the French Open in late May. This allowed him to participate in the tournament.
Discussing Sinner’s situation, Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in July, expressed his views during a conversation with Piers Morgan. Djokovic mentioned his shock at the incident, emphasizing his belief that Sinner did not intentionally violate doping rules. However, Djokovic criticized the handling of the case, pointing out issues of transparency, inconsistency, and the timing of the ban to avoid major tournaments.
Djokovic, who himself faced criticism for his stance on Covid-19 vaccination, clarified that he supported freedom of choice regarding vaccination.
