The debut of the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham faced a setback at the starting line. The practice and qualifying events for the only IndyCar race in Canada were called off on Friday due to unfinished track construction, preventing officials from conducting the final safety assessment. The organizers announced plans to reschedule all activities from the first day to Saturday’s agenda.
This year marks the first time that Markham is hosting the event, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, where it had been held since its inception in 1986. IndyCar President J. Douglas Boles expressed disappointment over the delay, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe and complete track for the event.
Longtime race attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Ontario shared mixed feelings about the postponement, acknowledging the significance of safety measures while expressing disappointment over the lack of on-track action that typically draws fans. The move of the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham last September, and the new temporary circuit layout faced challenges in completion.
Financial support from the Ontario and federal governments, along with the city of Markham’s substantial investment, underlined the significance of the event. Despite the delays, activities such as autograph sessions proceeded as scheduled, with a considerable turnout of fans at the Markham track.
Looking ahead, Saturday’s schedule promises an action-packed day with practice sessions and qualifying rounds, culminating in an exciting road course knockout format. The organizers expressed confidence in the circuit’s potential and thanked the city of Markham for its support in creating a fast and thrilling track layout for the upcoming races.
In addition to IndyCar, other racing series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series will also feature races on the road course over the weekend.
