In downtown Minneapolis, a protest on Saturday drew around 50,000 participants, gaining global attention. Meanwhile, at a site outside the city, dedicated demonstrators have been showing up daily since the death of Renee Good.

The Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building has been a focal point of unrest stemming from Operation Metro Surge, which began in December. Named after Minnesota’s first Protestant Episcopal bishop, known for advocating for minority communities, especially Native Americans, the building has now become a symbol of resistance against immigration raids in the city.

Local protesters brave freezing temperatures each morning at the building, armed with signs, whistles, and a resolute determination. Their presence serves as a reminder to border patrol agents that they are being closely monitored and challenged.

Whenever a white SUV arrives at the Whipple building, the crowd reacts with disapproval and vocal opposition, condemning the agents inside for their actions. The demonstrators aim to shame and hold accountable those involved in immigration enforcement activities.

The Whipple building acts as a temporary facility for individuals detained during immigration operations, including those attending asylum and deportation proceedings.

Supporters provide aid to released individuals, offering warm clothing, food, and other essentials. Volunteers like Harris have been diligently assisting for the past ten days, emphasizing the collaborative effort involved in supporting those affected by immigration enforcement actions.

Amidst the donated supplies, a sign at the building’s entrance reads, “Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building: Pigs only,” reflecting the sentiments of the protesters.

Participants come from various backgrounds, including a woman who joined during her lunch break and a man who traveled from Colorado to express his indignation. Vietnam war veteran Richard Sembura highlighted the discrepancy between his service and the actions of ICE agents, denouncing what he sees as unjust practices.

Residents like John, who has lived in St. Paul for forty years, celebrate the city’s diverse demographics and leadership, expressing pride in the inclusive representation in local government.

The protesters are determined to showcase Minnesota’s strong opposition to the policies of the Trump administration, urging global attention and support for their cause.

They emphasize their unwavering commitment to the fight, with one protester, sporting a jacket labeled ‘Granny against ICE,’ declaring their persistence and resolve to continue their presence and resistance against immigration enforcement activities.
