In a recent analysis of President Donald Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum, a psychotherapist and behavioral expert highlighted his display of authority in a typically collaborative international environment. Speaking to global leaders and financial figures in Davos, Switzerland, Trump covered diverse topics such as his desire to acquire Greenland for the US and his perspectives on China and NATO.
The expert, Shelly Dar, a seasoned mental health therapist, emphasized that Trump’s body language and speech mannerisms revealed interesting insights. Dar noted Trump’s controlled presentation, with his hands firmly placed on the podium for a significant part of the speech, limiting observable behavioral cues that usually indicate emotions like anxiety or agitation.
Dar pointed out that Trump’s deliberate concealment behind the podium aimed to project containment, limit emotional leakage, and assert authority. When Trump eventually moved away from the lectern, his behavior shifted noticeably, exhibiting a more confident and expressive demeanor, suggesting that he thrived more in spontaneous moments than scripted ones.
From a psychological perspective, Dar highlighted Trump’s communication strategy as prioritizing dominance over dialogue and certainty over nuance. This approach, according to Dar, starkly contrasts with the collaborative nature of the Davos setting, indicating Trump’s expectation for others to adapt to him rather than vice versa.
Dar further explained that Trump’s assumption of authority reflected a dominant personality style, which could be perceived as strength or rigidity depending on the audience’s perspective. Trump’s reluctance to align with the room’s energy and his focus on setting the tone rather than blending in underscored his distinct leadership approach.
The analysis suggested that Trump’s behavior at the forum showcased a personality deeply rooted in authority, with a preference for asserting dominance and control over fostering collaboration and adaptation. This distinct demeanor, as observed by Dar, encapsulated Trump’s communication style and demeanor throughout the address.
