Quebec’s maple syrup producers’ association head has raised concerns about the depletion of the province’s strategic syrup reserve due to high demand. President Luc Goulet emphasized the necessity of government assistance to support the industry’s expansion. The association established the reserve to stabilize prices and supply, which are heavily influenced by weather conditions impacting maple syrup yields.

In the past year, U.S. commercial customers stockpiled syrup amid fears of potential tariffs by former President Donald Trump. As sales continue to rise, the strategic reserve has been completely emptied, risking customer loss if weather conditions impede maple sap flow, as evidenced by prior stock shortages in 2007 and 2008.

Quebec’s maple syrup is gaining global market share, with exports increasing significantly in recent years. President of the Maple Industry Council, Louis Turenne, highlighted the industry’s growth potential and the need for increased investments and support from the government to explore new markets and boost production.

Over 70% of North American maple syrup production is concentrated in Quebec, contributing significantly to the province’s economy. The industry generated $1.21 billion in GDP in 2025, employing over 10,000 workers and generating substantial tax revenue. Efforts to diversify markets and reduce dependence on the U.S. market are underway to sustain industry growth and stability.

While the maple leaf symbolizes Canada, Quebec remains the epicenter of the syrup industry, crucial for economic vitality and employment in many regions. The industry’s importance as a key employer and economic driver was underscored during the recent election campaign, emphasizing the vital role maple syrup production plays in local communities’ sustainability and livelihoods.
