Growing up in Delta, B.C., I have cherished memories of family dinners spent on a small beige mat, with the sun setting and casting a warm glow through the curtains. These gatherings often featured delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken with homemade naan. This tradition, passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore, emphasized the importance of sharing meals on the ground as a way to express gratitude for the food we have.

As my siblings and I grew older, our busy schedules made it challenging to continue this tradition. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23, I decided to revive the practice. I invited friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to join us, and we recreated the circle on the ground, sharing a meal together.

The experience was heartwarming, as my father joined us and explained the tradition to my friends. This moment bridged the gap between my heritage and Canadian customs, fostering a sense of togetherness and connection. Inspired by this, my family decided to resurrect the tradition, gathering around the beige mat to share stories and food, strengthening our bonds despite our hectic lives.

Now, we prioritize dinner time as a sacred moment to come together, whether on the mat or around a dining table. This tradition, rooted in generations past, continues to unite us as a family, reminding us of the power of togetherness and shared experiences.
