A stern caution from a Russian nationalist politician has been directed towards Europe amid the urgency to devise a counteraction plan against the recent threats made by the US President.
Aleksey Zhuravlev, aged 63, expressed his views stating that figures like Donald Trump, whom he perceives as believing in his own supremacy, often lead to global calamities. In the event of a conflict with the US, Zhuravlev foresees Europe seeking refuge in Russia, humbly requesting protection.
The remarks come in the wake of Trump’s reiterated claim that the US requires Greenland for national security purposes. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen countered by affirming that Greenland is the rightful possession of its inhabitants and confirmed discussions with Denmark on the matter.
Through a post on Telegram, Zhuravlev emphasized the significance of observing Trump’s actions, indicating that his intentions are not mere rhetoric. Trump’s assertions of territorial rights over Greenland have initiated Pentagon preparations for a potential invasion, a move beyond historical motives like the Monroe Doctrine.
Zhuravlev criticized leaders with inflated egos and grand ambitions, stating they often steer the world towards catastrophe. Speculating on a hypothetical confrontation with the US, he suggested that Europe might turn to Russia for protection.
Zhuravlev, serving as the deputy chairman of the Russian parliament’s defence committee, recently proposed supplying nuclear-capable Russian missiles to Venezuela and Cuba. This proposal followed Trump’s authorization of CIA operations in Venezuela and threats of military actions against “narco-terrorists.”
In a separate incident, Zhuravlev advocated for a robust response to the US’s capture of a Russian-flagged oil tanker, suggesting the sinking of American Coast Guard vessels. He labeled this incident as an infringement on Russian territory, emphasizing the readiness to employ military force, including nuclear weapons, as outlined in Russia’s military doctrine.
