The Met Office has issued a severe red warning for Storm Goretti, urging people to remain indoors as the storm hits the UK. Storm Goretti is classified as a “multi-hazard event” by the Met Office, bringing potential snow accumulation of up to 30cm and wind gusts reaching 100mph. Weather alerts are in effect nationwide, with a heightened red warning now in place for the South West region.
Specifically affecting Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the red warning is active from 4pm until midnight today. The Met Office warns of exceptionally strong winds, with “violent gusts” lasting for up to three hours.
According to the Met Office, “Storm Goretti will bring extremely strong northwesterly winds to the Isles of Scilly and parts of Cornwall on Thursday evening, with peak gusts ranging from 80-100 mph in exposed areas.
“Wind speeds are expected to escalate quickly from 30-40 mph with violent gusts persisting for 2-3 hours before easing. The broader yellow warning remains in place until Friday morning, accompanied by hazardous coastal conditions due to very large waves.”
Individuals are advised to stay indoors if possible and secure any loose items that could pose a safety risk. The warning emphasizes the dangers of road travel during severe weather conditions and recommends avoiding driving. Checking and securing outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, and trampolines is essential to prevent injury or property damage.
Weather warnings have been issued for snow, wind, rain, and ice across the country, predicting potential disruptions and hazardous travel conditions.
Neil Armstrong, the chief forecaster at the Met Office, describes Storm Goretti as a complex severe weather event with significant impacts expected, particularly from snow in Wales and the Midlands and strong winds in the far South West. He advises residents in affected areas to stay updated on forecasts and follow guidance from local authorities.
