Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom regarding the timing of the Champion of Champions event that took place on Monday. The reason behind his frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.

The renowned player was unexpectedly placed in the tournament’s initial match, where he faced a disappointing 4-1 loss against Lei Peifan. Murphy, aged 43, shared that he was informed about his Monday match while returning from Nanjing, only discovering the event’s schedule on the day of the competition.

Following his defeat, Murphy voiced his anger towards Matchroom, criticizing the organization for the group arrangements. He emphasized his disappointment, stating that the handling of his participation in the tournament was disrespectful and unprofessional.

In contrast, other players such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not partake in the recent International Championship, were set to compete in the Champion of Champions later in the week, unlike Murphy who played on the opening day.

Responding to Murphy’s complaints, Matchroom released a statement acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing players’ needs and fairness in the tournament’s groupings.

The opening day of the Champion of Champions also saw World No. 1 Judd Trump securing a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei in the subsequent match. Tuesday’s lineup includes matches between Kyren Wilson and Jack Lisowski, Allen and Ziao Xintong, Williams and Burden, Selby and Maguire, Robertson and Ford, as well as Higgins and Guodong.
