U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he, along with a group of artificial intelligence company leaders, signed a voluntary accord at the White House meeting. The agreement includes conducting both internal and external reviews of AI technology.

During a press briefing outside the West Wing, Trump expressed his belief in the significant self-regulation efforts within the industry. He emphasized the importance of companies recognizing the necessity of self-policing.

The meeting between Trump and various top tech executives addressed the massive investments being made in AI infrastructure, such as data centers nationwide, which have faced opposition from local communities. Some industry leaders have called for a slowdown in AI development following instances of AI agents malfunctioning.

Despite concerns raised by some AI executives about the need for precautions and regulations, Trump reassured that the U.S. government would not hinder AI advancement. He highlighted the unveiling of an AI chatbot, America.gov, designed to assist Americans in accessing government services efficiently.

Top AI executives present at the White House included Dario Amodei, Greg Brockman, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk. Trump’s optimistic outlook on AI contrasts with the caution expressed by some industry figures, emphasizing the importance of balancing innovation with safety measures.

Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson were also in attendance. The event featured the launch of America.gov, aiming to streamline services like passport applications online.

Following discussions with tech CEOs, Trump praised the industry’s commitment to self-regulation and noted ongoing efforts to address community concerns about data centers. AI safety was a focal point of the discussions, with companies emphasizing the importance of ensuring product safety.

Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent AI pioneer, expressed doubts about Trump’s understanding of AI technology, likening it to owning a potential danger like a tiger cub. Trump highlighted the global competition in AI development, particularly with China, underscoring the U.S.’s leading position in the race.
