If the United States does not assert control over Greenland, President Donald Trump has warned that either Russia or China could potentially invade the territory, emphasizing his determination to secure Greenland for strategic reasons.

During a gathering with oil companies interested in participating in the exploitation of Venezuelan resources, President Trump expressed his intent to acquire Greenland through either diplomatic negotiations or force. When questioned about the financial aspects of the potential deal with Greenland, a territory currently under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark, President Trump deferred from discussing monetary offers at that moment.

President Trump reiterated the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the US must take action regarding Greenland to prevent the possibility of Russian or Chinese control over the territory, which he views as a threat to national security. He stated his preference for a peaceful resolution but affirmed readiness to pursue alternative means if necessary.

Furthermore, Defense Secretary John Healey has categorically stated that the United Kingdom will not support any US military intervention in Greenland, highlighting the UK’s commitment to acting only in accordance with legal frameworks and established alliances such as NATO. He emphasized that Greenland and Denmark are NATO members, and any military actions must adhere to legal and strategic justifications.

Recent concerns have arisen over President Trump’s potential deployment of US forces to assert control over Greenland, a move that has raised objections from Denmark’s Prime Minister and European leaders. The Danish Prime Minister warned that any US military actions targeting Greenland could jeopardize the NATO alliance. European leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, have emphasized the importance of respecting Greenland and Denmark’s autonomy in determining the territory’s future.
