A former Russian Prime Minister has remarked that the commitment of the UK and France to deploy troops in Ukraine has had a significant impact and has left Vladimir Putin uncertain about his next steps. Mikhail Kasyanov noted that this move by the coalition of willing nations has put the Russian leader in a dilemma. The statement follows reactions from Putin’s allies to Keir Starmer’s announcement that the UK and France would establish military bases in Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.

Kasyanov emphasized in an interview with Times Radio that Putin will need to adjust his approach in response to the recent developments. He highlighted the shift in strategy brought about by the coalition’s actions, separating the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine from other matters. The former Prime Minister pointed out the significance of reaffirming transatlantic unity and the role of Trump’s envoy in confirming the agreements made.

The decision to place troops on the ground in Ukraine has left Putin unsure of his next move, with pressure mounting on him to alter his stance. The joint declaration signed by the UK, French, and Ukrainian leaders in Paris includes plans for establishing protected facilities to aid Kyiv in defending itself. This move has drawn criticism from a close associate of Putin, Dmitry Rogozin, who labeled Starmer’s proposal as foolish and warned of potential repercussions.

In a positive development, Donald Trump’s representative, Steve Witkoff, indicated the US President’s support for security guarantees and readiness to deter Russian aggression. The proposed blueprint for ensuring peace involves a multinational force led by European nations, with potential involvement from non-European countries. The declaration also outlines commitments to ceasefire monitoring, ongoing support for the Ukrainian military, and assistance in the event of future Russian hostilities.

Keir Starmer expressed optimism about the collaboration between European and American allies in pursuit of peace, standing alongside President Zelensky. While progress has been made, he acknowledged that challenges lie ahead on the path to achieving lasting peace in the region.
