Virgin Media has shared valuable tips to maintain optimal internet speeds consistently. It is common knowledge that placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal obstacles like fish tanks can enhance performance. However, it is crucial to note that changes in weather conditions can also impact internet speed.
As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers may experience additional strain, necessitating placement in cool, well-ventilated areas.
In a recent blog update, Virgin Media explained how warmer weather can affect broadband performance, stating, “High temperatures can stress broadband equipment both indoors and outdoors.
“While external equipment is designed to handle heat, routers inside the house may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.
“Proper airflow is essential for routers to function effectively. Placing your Hub behind the TV, in a confined space, near a radiator, or in direct sunlight can lead to heat buildup, especially during a heatwave. This can result in slower speeds, dropped connections, or automatic router restarts to cool down.”
To counteract the impact of warm weather, ensure the router is positioned in a cooler environment. While high temperatures can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt internet activities.
Virgin Media emphasized that most weather-related broadband issues originate indoors.
“Factors such as thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor Hub placement generally have a more significant impact on daily connectivity than external weather conditions,” the company added.
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, place the Hub in an open, central location away from direct sunlight. Virgin Media also advises against placing the router near large metal objects or behind furniture.
After severe weather, ensure that cables are secure and undamaged, as suggested by the company.
Lastly, to minimize interference, limit the number of devices connected simultaneously.
