Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a concerning email circulating in the UK. The email targets individuals affected by the recent shutdown of O2’s outdated 3G mobile platform, urging them to upgrade their SIM card. Although most customers are unaffected by this change, scammers are attempting to exploit the situation.
The fraudulent email, posing as a legitimate communication from Virgin Media O2, prompts users to switch to a new 5G SIM card for a supposedly faster and stronger network. The company emphasizes that these emails are not genuine and advises customers not to engage with them. Instead, users are urged to delete the emails immediately and forward any suspicious messages to phishing@virginmediao2.co.uk.
This phishing scam aims to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive personal information. In some cases, scammers may even send a SIM card via courier, request a PIN entry, and provide instructions to log in to the O2 app with a supplied password. Clicking on the “Contact Us” button within the email could lead victims directly to the scammers.
If successful, scammers could obtain access to private accounts or gather enough personal data to compromise other online accounts, potentially resulting in identity theft. To stay safe, it is recommended to verify the authenticity of any email from a service provider by contacting them directly using official channels. Seeking a second opinion from a trusted source before taking action is also advisable.
