In a quest for fame, a tragic incident unfolded involving vloggers Monalisa Perez and Pedro Ruiz, who meticulously documented their lives on various social media platforms. The couple, in their early 20s, strived to attract a devoted audience by showcasing their relationship, family moments with their young daughter, and engaging in daring challenges, including sharing the gender reveal of their unborn child.
Their online presence culminated in a video titled ‘Doing scary stunts at the fair. Part 1’ in June 2017, where they frequented a local fairground. Despite warnings from Pedro’s aunt about the dangers, they proceeded with a life-threatening stunt to enhance their online popularity.
During the ill-fated stunt, Pedro held a book against his chest while Monalisa, seven months pregnant, aimed a handgun at him, believing the book would shield him from the bullet. Tragically, the bullet pierced through the book, fatally striking Pedro. Despite desperate attempts to save him, Pedro succumbed to his injuries at the scene, leading to Monalisa’s arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.
Following a guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter, Monalisa was sentenced to intermittent jail time over three years, prohibited from possessing firearms, placed on probation, and barred from profiting from the video or the incident. The devastating outcome left both families grieving a tragic loss, with Pedro’s aunt expressing regret over the fatal prank gone awry, emphasizing that love should not have led to such a catastrophic outcome.
