A recent study suggests that engaging in just 10 minutes of physical activity daily may offer protective benefits against cancer. Researchers at Newcastle University have uncovered that brief, intense exercise sessions can potentially impede the advancement of the disease.

The study revealed that vigorous exercise prompts significant changes in the molecular composition of the bloodstream. These swift modifications appear to hinder the growth of bowel cancer cells and accelerate the repair of damaged DNA. When bowel cancer cells were exposed to blood enriched with these exercise-induced molecules in a lab setting, researchers observed substantial genetic alterations. More than 1,300 genes, including those related to DNA repair, energy production, and cancer cell growth, exhibited changes in their activity levels.

Published in the International Journal of Cancer, the study underscores how physical activity could lower the susceptibility to bowel cancer. The research illustrates that exercise transmits molecular signals through the bloodstream that impact genes governing tumor growth and genetic stability.

Dr. Sam Orange, the senior lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology and lead investigator of the study, highlighted the groundbreaking findings. He emphasized that exercise not only benefits healthy tissues but also sends influential signals through the bloodstream that directly influence numerous genes in cancer cells. This insight could pave the way for developing therapies that mimic the positive effects of exercise on cellular DNA repair and energy utilization, potentially enhancing cancer treatments and outcomes.

The study involved 30 participants aged between 50 and 78, both men and women, who were overweight or obese, a recognized cancer risk factor, but otherwise in good health. Each participant underwent a brief yet intensive cycling assessment lasting about 10 minutes. Following the exercise, blood samples were collected and analyzed for 249 proteins. Thirteen of these proteins exhibited increased levels post-physical activity, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), which aids in DNA repair.

Dr. Orange further emphasized that the results suggest exercise not only benefits healthy tissues but also creates an unfavorable environment for cancer cell proliferation. Even a single 10-minute workout session can have a positive impact, signaling the importance of consistent physical activity in maintaining health.

According to the NHS, regular exercise not only lowers the risk of bowel cancer but also offers numerous other health benefits, including improved self-esteem, mood, sleep quality, and energy levels. The NHS recommends engaging in at least 150 minutes of exercise per week for optimal health.
