President Donald Trump continues to push for the United States to acquire Greenland, following unsuccessful negotiations with Denmark that resulted in a “fundamental disagreement.”

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio held discussions with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, a member of NATO. Trump reaffirmed his stance on social media just before the talks, emphasizing the U.S.’s perceived need for Greenland in the interest of national security and calling on NATO to assist in the acquisition. Rasmussen described the talks as “frank and constructive” during a press briefing after the meeting.

To address Trump’s desires concerning Greenland without ceding control, a “high-level working group” will be formed to explore potential solutions.

Reports suggest that the Trump administration is willing to offer substantial financial compensation to the people of Greenland in exchange for their support in transferring sovereignty.

Rasmussen emphasized the importance of finding common ground while respecting Denmark’s territorial integrity and the self-determination of the Greenlandic population, despite differing views with the U.S. on the matter. He confirmed that dialogue would continue with the U.S., despite the fundamental disagreement about Greenland’s future.

A high-level working group will be established to address American security concerns while upholding Denmark’s boundaries, with the first meeting expected to take place within weeks.

This development comes after discussions between Danish and Greenlandic officials with Vance and Rubio in Washington D.C., where Rasmussen underscored the need to find a mutually agreeable path forward amidst the differing perspectives on Greenland.
