Patty Czajka, hailing from Detroit, was captivated by a Canadian TV show set in Prince Edward Island during her childhood. Every Sunday, she would eagerly watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, admiring Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the 1990s series. Upon learning of Ruffman’s attendance at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the show, Czajka quickly secured a ticket to the event.

Describing Ruffman as her childhood “Disney princess,” Czajka expressed her excitement at finally visiting P.E.I. for the convention. Enthusiastic fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event celebrating the acclaimed Canadian series that aired in over 100 countries from 1990 to 1996.

“Road to Avonlea” followed the story of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the turn of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show resonated with audiences worldwide.

During the three-day convention, attendees enjoyed oyster and wine tastings, engaging in panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew. Some guests explored filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, and the Cavendish house that inspired “Anne of Green Gables.” Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, emphasized the enduring appeal of the show’s themes of kindness, friendship, and fellowship.

Ruffman shared her delight in connecting with fans at the convention, noting the lasting impact of the show on viewers. Czajka mentioned that she is now introducing the series to her children, finding joy in sharing the timeless experience with them, a sentiment echoed by many fans at the event.

The convention served as a nostalgic gathering for fans, highlighting the enduring legacy of “Road to Avonlea” and its ability to transcend generations, fostering a sense of unity and nostalgia that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
