Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister has announced that five senior Iranian officials will be subjected to sanctions for their involvement in activities that undermine global peace in the Strait of Hormuz. The minister emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation in the Strait for global trade and energy security, stating that the sanctioned individuals’ actions threaten these principles.
The sanctioned officials, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini. These individuals have been implicated in activities that posed a threat to the critical international waterway.
With the latest sanctions imposed by Canada, a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities within Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors have now been sanctioned. These measures are part of ongoing efforts to address conflicts and tensions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, despite challenges in reaching a peace agreement.
The conflict, which began in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, has led to disruptions in global oil and natural gas shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
