Dan Evans, a key player in the victorious 2015 Davis Cup British team, expressed disappointment and feeling insulted for being left out of the doubles selection. Despite his omission, Evans hinted at the possibility of quitting the team in response to the decision, emphasizing that his doubles skills were not adequately considered. In a statement to the i, Evans highlighted the need to focus on game styles rather than just doubles rankings in Davis Cup selections, suggesting that different players should be considered based on compatibility.

The situation escalated when Evans was sidelined from the 2021 Davis Cup Finals doubles match in Austria, where he only participated in singles matches while Neal Skupski and Joe Salsbury were chosen for the doubles. Expressing frustration and confusion over his exclusion from the doubles team, Evans contemplated his future involvement in the Davis Cup, indicating a need for discussions with team captain Leon Smith to align on strategies and selections.

In a turn of events, Evans teamed up with Skupski in the following year’s Davis Cup clash against Colombia, securing a crucial doubles victory despite a singles defeat. The win contributed to Great Britain’s advancement to the Davis Cup Finals, but Evans faced setback in 2023 due to an injury, preventing his participation in the finale.

Meanwhile, the ongoing 2025 Davis Cup Finals witnessed Britain’s absence following their defeat to Japan in the qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Austria. Berrettini’s triumph over Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s win against Filip Misolic propelled Italy to a showdown with Belgium in the upcoming round.
