Residents of the UK have been cautioned about the threat of avalanches amidst an ongoing Arctic cold spell bringing heavy snowfall across the nation.

Avalanche warnings have been issued for six regions in Scotland, with Aberdeenshire declaring a major incident. The Met Office has also maintained alerts for snow and ice covering most parts of the UK today.

Aberdeenshire Council has advised of potential isolation for rural communities and the risk of power outages. Transportation networks have been severely disrupted, with some train services suspended due to deep snow accumulation on tracks.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice and snow in the northern regions until midnight, with additional snowfall expected, particularly at higher altitudes. Southern and western areas face a separate ice warning until early morning.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service has identified six high-risk areas prone to avalanches, urging caution in Creag Meagaidh, Lochaher, North Cairngorms, South Cairngorms, Torridon, and Glencoe.

Authorities in Aberdeenshire have declared a major incident due to heavy snowfall and potential icy rain, leading to further disruptions. Residents are advised to assist each other, especially those in remote or vulnerable situations.

The Met Office’s warning encompasses a vast area from Dundee to the Isle of Skye, projecting ongoing snowfall with icy conditions persisting, particularly on frozen surfaces.

Police Scotland has alerted the public about expected snow impacts in the north and northeast regions, stressing adherence to travel advisories. Collaboration among local agencies aims to mitigate disruption caused by adverse weather conditions.

Public cooperation is encouraged to ensure community safety and service continuity during the challenging weather conditions.
