Fire TV Stick users are being urged to exercise caution amid recent developments regarding the popular tool “Downloader.” The tool has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, paving the way for a potential scam app targeting unsuspecting users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s marketplace raised concerns over the weekend. This tool, in use for almost a decade, allowed Fire TV owners to access and install apps not found on official platforms.
Despite its long-standing popularity, Downloader faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update that categorized it as a full web browser, violating Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.
Elias Saba, the developer behind Downloader and owner of the Fire TV site AFTVnews, clarified that the issue arose from the app mistakenly identifying itself as a browser. He swiftly addressed this in an update, hoping for Amazon’s approval to reinstate the tool in the Appstore soon.
In the interim, users are advised to steer clear of a counterfeit version of Downloader that aims to deceive Fire TV owners into unauthorized payments. Saba emphasized the importance of reporting this fraudulent app to Amazon.
For existing legitimate Downloader users, it is recommended not to uninstall the app, as reinstallation may not be possible until Amazon resolves the situation. Additionally, disabling Auto Offload is advisable to prevent automatic removal of the app.
Pending Amazon’s approval of the necessary adjustments, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV devices in the coming week, requiring users to stay vigilant throughout this period.
