The flu has resurged following holiday gatherings during Christmas and New Year, leading to an increase in hospitalizations in England. NHS officials have noted a 9% rise in flu-related hospital admissions last week, sparking concerns of a potential “double peak” and prolonged flu season. This uptick in cases coincides with the return of children to school after the festive break, which may contribute to further infections.

According to NHS national medical director Professor Meghana Pandit, hospitals are grappling with a surge in patients admitted with flu and other respiratory illnesses. The ongoing cold weather has also resulted in an influx of vulnerable patients with respiratory issues seeking emergency care, alongside a rise in injuries from slips and falls due to icy conditions.

The emergence of the new H3N2 strain, known as the ‘superflu,’ has fueled an early spike in flu cases, with uncertainties about whether the levels will subside quickly or persist at elevated rates for an extended period. Some hospitals have implemented measures such as requiring face masks for staff, patients, and visitors to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Flu hospitalizations peaked in mid-December but have since increased, indicating a surge in infections likely stemming from holiday interactions. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized the importance of vaccination to protect against flu, especially for vulnerable populations. The current data reflects the highest number of flu patients in hospitals at this time of year since records began in 2021.

In Australia, where flu seasons often foreshadow trends in other countries, record-high infection rates were observed during their winter season. Despite the challenges posed by the flu surge, healthcare teams are working diligently to provide necessary care, urging the public to seek treatment and vaccination opportunities to safeguard against the virus.
