A 93-year-old widow, Gwen Whittle, shared a touching experience of kindness shown by two groups of strangers as she carried on a long-standing tradition.
Gwen and her husband, James, who she was married to for 71 years, had a tradition of visiting Toby Carvery on Aigburth Road in Liverpool every Boxing Day. Following James’ passing in September, Gwen decided to uphold the tradition and reserved a table at the restaurant, bringing a photo of them together.
Gwen reminisced about meeting James in 1952 when she moved to Liverpool for teaching and how they quickly fell in love, eventually getting married in 1956. Despite James’ recent passing at the age of 93, Gwen fondly recalled their happy life together, filled with laughter and cherished memories.
After moving to Hale Village in 1978, the couple started their annual Toby Carvery tradition. This year, Gwen decided to keep the tradition alive even though she was alone. Placing a photo of her and James on the table for company, she expressed her contentment in honoring their tradition solo.
During her Boxing Day visit to the restaurant, Gwen found herself seated near two families who displayed exceptional acts of kindness towards her. One woman invited Gwen to join their table, and another secretly paid for her lunch, explaining that she wanted to bring cheer to someone in need of upliftment.
Touched by the strangers’ generosity, Gwen was moved to tears, especially as it was her first Christmas without James. Despite the bittersweetness of the occasion, Gwen found solace in the kind gestures that made her day as lovely as possible during a challenging time.
Grateful for the unexpected kindness, Gwen penned a letter to the Liverpool Echo, hoping to share her heartwarming experience and bring joy to others in the midst of difficult circumstances.
