EE mobile users are being advised to be cautious as a scam text message has resurfaced. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have reported that some EE customers are receiving urgent messages warning them that they are on the verge of losing a large number of EE reward points unless they take immediate action.
According to Bitdefender, if you receive a message stating that a significant amount of EE reward points will expire soon, it is likely a scam. Cybercriminals are pretending to be affiliated with EE to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that lead to fake websites. These fraudulent sites are designed to steal login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit.
The success of this scam lies in the sense of urgency it creates, with the perpetrators hoping that individuals will act hastily without thinking. Bitdefender explained that scammers exploit this urgency by establishing tight deadlines to make users feel as though they are about to lose something important. The link provided in the message does not direct users to an official EE site but instead leads to a deceptive website.
Legitimate alerts from EE will only appear within users’ official EE accounts, not in unsolicited texts. Any message pressuring you to act quickly or imposing a countdown should raise suspicion. If you receive a suspicious text, forward it to 7726 and then delete it.
This type of scam has targeted EE customers in the past. In January of this year, users reported receiving convincing fake messages regarding reward points. Some customers shared their experiences, cautioning others to be vigilant and avoid falling for such scams.
EE has clarified that it does not operate a points program and has highlighted examples of scam messages that users should watch out for. The company’s latest advice includes refraining from clicking on unknown links in text messages, not responding to suspicious messages, avoiding calling the numbers provided in such messages, and never sharing personal or financial information.
If you are an EE user, it is essential to heed these warnings and safeguard yourself against potential scams.
