Iran has yet to respond directly to Trump’s remarks. However, there was a visit by Oman’s foreign minister to Tehran, a traditional intermediary between Iran and Washington. The nature of any potential promises from Iran remains uncertain, especially considering Trump’s stringent demands regarding Iran’s nuclear activities and ballistic missile capabilities, which Iran contends are vital for its defense.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, addressing foreign diplomats in Tehran, accused Israel and the U.S. of instigating the violence without providing any evidence, attributing the unrest to giving a pretext for U.S. intervention.
In a display of support for the ruling establishment, Iran urged pro-government demonstrators to take to the streets, voicing anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiments in response to the challenges posed by protesters against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Amidst deliberations within the U.S. administration, including discussions on potential responses like cyberattacks and military strikes, Trump mentioned that the military is exploring robust options. He warned of severe repercussions if Iran retaliates.
While indicating ongoing talks for a meeting with Iran, Trump emphasized the possibility of pre-emptive action due to the escalating death toll and continued arrests of protesters.
Parliamentary speaker of Iran cautioned that the U.S. and Israel could become “legitimate targets” if force is used to protect demonstrators. Over 10,600 individuals have reportedly been detained during the protests, with hundreds of casualties, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.
The internet blackout in Iran has hindered external monitoring of the demonstrations, leaving concerns about potential crackdowns. Despite videos showing continued protests, Iran has not disclosed comprehensive casualty figures.
Fears of reprisals have kept many off the streets, with authorities warning against participation in demonstrations to avoid violence and emphasizing consequences for those cooperating with alleged agitators.
