Iran announced on Wednesday that it had carried out strikes on 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the sinking of five Iranian oil tankers by the United States. These attacks mark the most significant exchange of hostilities involving shipping between the two sides since the commencement of the six-month-long conflict.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran stated that it had launched a ballistic missile assault on a U.S. base near Al Azraq in eastern Jordan. Additionally, the IRGC reported targeting two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers that were attempting to navigate through a restricted area in the Strait of Hormuz.
The resulting attacks in the strategic waterway led to a surge in oil prices, with the international benchmark Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel for the first time since July. Amidst ongoing conflicts in the region, including heightened tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen, the energy markets have been further destabilized.
Consumers in the United States have experienced a notable increase in gasoline prices, with the average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline reaching $4.15, representing a 26% year-over-year rise. Diesel prices also surged, climbing to $5.90 per gallon, marking a 59% increase compared to the same day the previous year.
The escalating situation has prompted concerns about the likelihood of a lasting resolution before the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, with Bank of America analysts expressing skepticism about the prospects for a comprehensive agreement.
In response to the U.S. military’s actions, Iran has declared an expanded maritime restricted zone encompassing areas extending from Chabahar in Iran into the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The precise coordinates of this restricted zone are yet to be disclosed.
Meanwhile, incidents involving tanker attacks and military engagements in the region have further heightened tensions. A drone strike on an Iraqi oil tanker resulted in a fire onboard, although no casualties were reported among the crew members. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported disabling fires on vessels in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman during recent military activities in the region.
Iran’s actions have significantly disrupted the flow of oil through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. In response, the U.S. has implemented a military blockade of Iranian ports while attempting to guide tankers through the strait to mitigate the impact on oil exports.
The ongoing conflict has also seen Iran targeting U.S. military installations in the region, with recent missile strikes causing damage. The situation remains volatile, with both sides engaged in a cycle of retaliatory actions that continue to raise concerns about regional stability and global energy markets.
