In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in the northern region of Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations within the Margaree River. This technique involves the use of an electric current to momentarily stun fish, allowing crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before releasing them back into the river.
Michael Fabiano, the conservation co-ordinator at the association, mentioned that electrofishing operations typically run from May to late September. Despite processing thousands of fish each season, there is only a two percent mortality rate. Fish safety is the top priority, with operations paused when water temperatures are too high to ensure the well-being of the fish.
To minimize potential risks associated with working with electricity in water, crew members wear heavy rubber gloves and chest waders. The electric current levels are carefully adjusted to cause fish to briefly roll over, ensuring minimal harm. According to Fabiano, no crew members have experienced any serious shocks during his 18-month tenure with the group.
Crews conduct surveys along the 120-kilometre river to pinpoint the most productive streams and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The catch primarily consists of trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional sightings of eels and lampreys. This season, the association has captured and released around 1,800 fish across nine streams, a decrease from the previous year.
Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, highlighted the increased focus on scientific research due to reduced data collection efforts by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the association sought reliable data to monitor river health amidst changing climate conditions. To address the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to procure electrofishing equipment. While manual fish counts are also conducted in the river, MacNeil emphasized that electrofishing provides more accurate data on juvenile fish populations.
The adoption of electrofishing has allowed for a comprehensive assessment of juvenile fish within specific territories, enhancing the precision of population data. The association’s efforts aim to maintain a robust understanding of the river ecosystem as environmental conditions evolve.
