Love Island may not be the usual place to find an emergency medicine doctor, but Dr. Alex George is no ordinary medical professional. Recognized for his advocacy work in youth mental health, he holds a doctorate and an honorary degree. Dr. Alex has served as a government youth mental health ambassador and even hosted his own show on BBC1, called Dr Alex: Our Young Mental Health Crisis.

Following the tragic loss of his brother to suicide in 2020 and his own diagnoses of ADHD and OCD, Dr. Alex has been open about his experiences, resonating with his large following on Instagram. A prolific author with four bestsellers and a podcast host of Stompcast, he challenges the traditional British approach to grief, emphasizing the need for a more compassionate and nuanced understanding.

Dr. Alex, residing in London, believes that grieving is a personal journey and should not be rushed or dictated by societal expectations. He questions the widely accepted five stages of grief model, arguing that it oversimplifies the complex emotional process of mourning.

Struggling with his brother’s death, Dr. Alex turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms before seeking help and receiving his ADHD and OCD diagnoses. He emphasizes the importance of early detection and support for neurodivergent individuals, drawing from his own experiences of overcoming challenges and embracing his unique strengths.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Alex acknowledges the impact of ADHD on his childhood and professional life. He advocates for improved recognition and support for neurodivergent individuals, emphasizing the transformative power of timely diagnoses and understanding.

Despite the societal norms favoring neurotypical individuals, Dr. Alex sees his neurodivergence as a “superpower” that has enabled him to excel in certain environments. He calls for a shift towards empowering individuals with differences, highlighting the value of embracing diverse strengths for personal growth and fulfillment.
