A man in prison killed his cellmate upon discovering that the latter had sexually assaulted his younger sister. Shane Goldsby, aged 25 at the time, was captured on video attacking 70-year-old Robert Munger on June 2, 2020, at the Airways Heights Corrections Center in Washington, US. Munger was serving a lengthy sentence for offenses related to child abuse and pornography.

Goldsby expressed shock and disbelief at sharing a cell with the individual who had harmed his sister when she was a minor. Despite requesting a cell change multiple times, his appeals were reportedly ignored. The situation escalated as Munger continued to boast about his crimes, leading Goldsby to take drastic action.

Investigations revealed no prior connection between the two men, despite Goldsby’s suspicions. Goldsby was serving time for a previous offense of stealing a police car. Tragically, an emergency call made by Goldsby before the incident went unanswered, further fueling his belief that the outcome was somehow intended.

In August 2021, Goldsby was sentenced to nearly 25 years in prison for the murder. He expressed remorse and apologized to Munger’s family for his actions, acknowledging the pain he caused. Goldsby’s troubled upbringing, marked by abuse and instability, was shared during the court proceedings, shedding light on the challenging circumstances that led to the tragic event.

The Washington Department of Corrections described the incident as regrettable and complex, noting that existing policies should have prevented the two inmates from being housed together. However, due to a lack of information about the connection between Goldsby and Munger, they were placed in the same cell, leading to the fatal outcome.
