Argos is currently offering a popular alternative to Sky Q-style upgrades with the Manhattan S4-R set-top box. This device, which was introduced last month, provides similar features to Sky’s premium service, such as the ability to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.

The main advantage of the Manhattan S4-R over Sky Q is its pricing structure. Unlike Sky Q, which requires a monthly subscription, the Manhattan S4-R grants access to over 100 channels without any ongoing fees. Operating on the Freesat platform, it leverages existing satellite dishes to deliver free TV channels directly to viewers, including popular networks like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.

Manhattan emphasizes the user-friendly design of the S4-R, boasting features like a simple interface, built-in search functions, and access to a vast library of on-demand entertainment totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.

While the Manhattan S4-R may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, its appeal lies in being a cost-free viewing option. Priced at £219.99, the 500GB model of the Manhattan S4-R is now available at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions anticipated to launch soon. Demand is high, as indicated by Argos labeling the device as “in demand” and “selling fast.”

According to Manhattan’s COO Alex Arbab-Zadeh, the S4-R aims to replicate the subscription-free experience of their T4-R Freeview recorder for Freesat users. He highlighted the S4-R’s enhanced recording capabilities, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings compared to the previous two-channel limit, making it an attractive choice for households seeking a more affordable and flexible TV service.

In a similar vein, the Pleio puck has entered the market as another challenger to traditional TV providers. Offering over 50 live channels via internet streaming, Pleio aims to revolutionize TV access without the need for an aerial. Priced at £99.99, the Pleio puck, which includes a gaming controller and access to 200 online games, is available again after initial stock shortages through retailers like Amazon and eBay.

For those considering Sky services, the company has announced a 20% price reduction ahead of the upcoming World Cup. The Sky Glass Air TV now starts at £4.50 per month, while the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, is available from £11 per month.
